3 Key Questions to Ask on Your First Day

The first day at a new job can be overwhelming. You’ve worked so hard during the interview process to convey why you were the best candidate. Now, it’s time to prove why you are the best. The best way to prove your worth and exceed your bosses expectations is to ask questions — a lot of questions! Here are some examples of questions you can ask on your first day:

Question: What are the expectations of my role?

Why?: Now that you have the job, you should have a basic idea of what your role will entail. But, the key to success in your new position is knowing what your boss expects of you. Find out what your boss expects from you in your first 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days. You can also ask what your boss expects you to have accomplished within your first year.

Question: What is your communication style — how often should I update you? Should I give updates in person or via email?

Why?: Knowing this information will allow you to not make crucial communication mistakes that can make you look too quiet, like you aren’t doing enough, or seeming needy.

Question: How will my performance be evaluated? How often will I be evaluated?

Why?: Asking this question early in your new role shows initiative and professionalism. If you know how you will be evaluated, you can keep track of your work and know how to best present it when the time comes. Some bosses prefer to do frequent evaluations while others do quarterly evaluations.
