Recruiters spend hours a day interviewing and searching for candidates to fill a position. It’s no surprise that they have become experts in determining which skills correlate with a good fit from a bad one in a matter of seconds. So, we decided to ask our recruiters to share their top 5 things they want a candidate to know before the interview.
1. Do your research
Recruiters spend all day interviewing people and are very familiar with the job description at hand. It is easy to tell who has done their homework and who hasn’t. Take a few minutes to read the job description thoroughly, and while you’re at it read up about the company too.
2. Know your resume
Knowing your resume inside and out will help you create clear stories about experiences. At Headway, we use the STAR method. STAR is an acronym that stands for Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This is a technique that organizes your answers to questions in a behavioral interview. Knowing your resume and relevant experiences that relate to previous jobs will help you nail the STAR method.
3. Be professional
Most of the interviews our recruiters conduct are over the phone or through video. Dressing professionally for a video interview or having a quiet space to conduct a phone interview are ways you can act professionally in an alternative interview set-up. Please clean your room before a video interview! Read our other posts about video interview tips and how to nail a phone interview
4. Honesty is the best policy
Don’t embellish your work experience to make yourself look better. It is usually obvious and the recruiters can tell.
5. Ask questions
Asking questions gives you the opportunity to ask more about the job position and maybe even a chance to showcase more of your skills and abilities.
